The skin is composed of two main layers (Figure 2.1). The epidermis is the outer layer which comes into contact with the external environment. It is considerably thinner than the dermis, approximately 10% of total skin thickness. The dermis is the powerhouse of the skin, providing the supportive structures to allow the epidermis to function.
