What is the difference between a furuncle and a carbuncle? A furuncle (boil) is a deep follicular abscess, and a carbuncle is a more serious subtype in which there is involvement of several adjoining follicles. A furuncle may develop into a carbuncle. Carbuncles are more likely to develop complications, such as cellulitis or septicemia. |
