What was the Tuskegee Study? The Tuskegee Study is one of the most iniquitous prospective medical studies ever done in the United States. Untreated black men with syphilis, without their knowledge or consent, were randomized into treated and untreated groups and then followed so that the complications and mortality of untreated syphilis could be monitored. This study was part of the impetus to establish strict guidelines for biomedical research. In 1997, President Clinton formally apologized to the survivors for this United States Public Health Service (USPHS) study. |
