Define the cytokine response to M. leprae in tuberculoid versus lepromatous patients.

Studies of circulating cytokines in leprosy patients and cytokine production in skin show those tuberculoid patients have a helper T cell type I (Th1) response to M. leprae with predominant interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon (IFN)-? production, while lepromatous cases have a response of Th2-type cytokines.
