What are Virchow cells? Lepromatous leprosy exhibits an extensive cellular infiltrate separated from the epidermis by a narrow grenz zone of collagen. In florid early lesions, macrophages contain abundant live bacilli. In time, and with therapy, degenerate bacilli accumulate in macrophages, and these cells are called lepra cells or Virchow cells; they have foamy cytoplasms and are Fite stain–positive. |
