What is the significance of multiple brown papules often seen on the periorbital area, cheeks, and nose? The condition described is dermatosis papulosa nigra, and it is commonly seen in blacks, particularly black women. They are often referred to colloquially as “flesh moles.” In truth, they are not “moles” (nevi) at all and represent a variant of seborrheic keratoses. The lesions tend to increase in number over time and do not typically resolve on their own. They have no malignant potential and are largely a cosmetic concern. Removal may be accomplished by light electrodesiccation (a personal favorite) and/or curettage. Alternatively, lesions may be treated with light application of liquid nitrogen, but care must be taken to avoid permanent hypopigmentation, a sequela of increased risk in persons with dark skin. |
