How does neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) present? It is an acute self-limited disease that gradually improves over 1 to 2 months. The cutaneous findings include diffuse superficial erythema and scaling that are often most apparent in the malar area of the face but can occur anywhere. Neonates frequently have other systemic findings, such as those seen in SLE: anemia, thrombocytopenia, jaundice, and hepatosplenomegaly with abnormal liver function tests. Another prevalent finding is atrioventricular heart block, which is permanent. |
