What class of drugs is the most common cause of anaphylaxis? Beta-lactam antibiotics. Anaphylactic reactions occur in 1 to 5 per 10,000 administrations of penicillin. Most allergic reactions to betalactam antibiotics produce urticaria and angioedema, but 10% may result in life-threatening hypotension, bronchospasm, or laryngeal edema. Approximately 1% of all anaphylactic reactions are fatal. Fatal reactions may occur within minutes of parenteral administration of these drugs. |
