What is tinea nigra? A superficial dermatomycosis caused by Phaeoanellomyces (Exophiala) werneckii. This is a dematiaceous (pigment-producing) fungus. It causes an asymptomatic tan, brown, or black patch on the palms or soles. The diagnosis is made by demonstrating pigmented hyphae on a KOH examination of the lesion. Tinea nigra has been confused with acral lentiginous melanoma. |
