This term applies to babies exhibiting blue-red or red indurated macules or papules on the face, trunk, or scalp present at birth, or within the first 2 days of life (Fig. 57-2). These lesions represent extramedullary dermal erythropoiesis and are seen in congenital rubella syndrome, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus infection, neuroblastoma, leukemia, erythroblastosis fetalis, and twin transfusion syndrome.
