Why is pellagra abundant in the refugee camps? The inadequate food supplies available in the camps are often heavily reliant on corn-based products that have insufficient levels of nicotinic acid (niacin). This explanation also accounts for the pellagra outbreaks in the southern United States in orphanages and prisons, and among sharecroppers in the early 20th century, where the diet was based almost exclusively on corn.
