What dermatologic changes are associated with chewing betel nut? Betel nut chewing stains the teeth, gingiva, and oral mucosa. The color ranges from red to black, depending on the preparation used. Chewers regard the color change as cosmetically appealing. More worrisome, however, is the greatly increased risk of oral squamous cell carcinomas in chewers, attributable to both the areca nut and the lime.
