Tungiasis (jiggers) was originally confined to the subtropical and tropical regions of the New World. How did it get to Africa, where it is now extensively entrenched in the sub-Sahara region? Ships returning from the New World sometimes took on sand for ballast. In 1872, a ship dropped infested sand ballast on the coast of West Africa introducing the noxious pest to this region. It is likely that it was introduced more than once, and it has also spread to Pakistan and parts of India on the Asian continent. |
