Animal-Based CollagenBovine Dermal Collagen Dispersed in Phosphate-Buffered Physiological Saline Containing 0.3% Lidocaine These substances (example: Zyderm) are composed of highly purified bovine dermal collagen that has been dispersed in phosphate-buffered physiological saline containing 0.3% lidocaine [10, 18]. Concentrations include 35 mg/ml and 65 mg/ml of purified bovine dermal collagen. Bovine Collagen Cross-Linked with Glutaraldehyde and Suspended in Saline and 3 mg/ml Lidocaine Another injectable bovine collagen (example: Zyplast) is cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and suspended in saline and 3 mg/ml lidocaine. Cross-linking with glutaraldehyde adds strength and makes the collagen more resistant to proteolytic degradation. The implant will retain its integrity and its inherent water content to a greater degree than is the case for noncross- linked bovine collagen [18]. |
