What is the primary difference between microscopic polyangiitis and PAN? The distinguishing feature for these two systemic disorders is primarily based on the size of the vessel that is affected. Patients with microscopic polyangiitis have involvement of small arterioles, whereas individuals with classic PAN have involvement of medium-sized arteries. Some authors consider microscopic polyarteritis a subset of PAN, although others consider it a distinct form of vasculitis.
