What substance is elevated in gout? Gout is a heterogeneous group of disorders of purine metabolism resulting in elevated levels of uric acid (monosodium urate). Patients have either increased uric acid production or decreased renal excretion. Some risk factors for hyperuricemia include alcohol use, obesity, high purine diets, diabetes, myeloproliferative disorders, renal disease, and/or diuretic therapy. |
