Are patients with genital herpes at greater risk for becoming infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)? Genital infection with herpes simplex virus–2 increases the risk for HIV infection, even between active episodes. The population of immune cells that remain at the site of genital herpes lesions even after they have healed is thought to provide a favorable environment for acquisition of HIV. |
