How about herpes zoster? Herpes zoster is a self-limited disease and in most young, otherwise healthy persons, symptomatic measures (cool compresses, antihistamines, analgesics) are sufficient. However, for persons who are over 50 years of age, have ophthalmic zoster, or are immunocompromised, systemic antiviral therapy is recommended (see Table 25-2). If started within 72 hours of the onset of skin lesions, systemic antiviral therapy reduces the discomfort and duration of the acute infection and may reduce the severity of postherpetic neuralgia. |
