What is the treatment for varicella? Generally, symptomatic therapy, such as calamine lotion and oral antihistamines, is all that is required. Acyclovir is not routinely recommended for otherwise healthy children from a cost-effective standpoint. However, for varicella in an adult or immunocompromised individual, prompt initiation of systemic antiviral therapy is advised (Table 25-2). Routine childhood vaccination to prevent varicella is now recommended for children and adolescents who have not been infected. Vaccination is also recommended for susceptible adults, especially those at high risk for exposure. |
