What is the ruby laser?

The ruby laser has an active medium of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) that has been chromium-doped. Some of the aluminum (Al⁺³) atoms have been replaced with chromium (Cr⁺³) atoms. This laser emits a wavelength of 694 nm that is in the red visible light spectrum. These lasers may be Q-switched or long-pulsed.
