How common is chronic venous insufficiency in the geriatric population?

Epidemiologic studies show an incidence in the geriatric population that approaches 6%. The economic impact of this condition is enormous; the estimated total cost in the United States for the treatment of venous ulcers is more than 1 billion dollars per year in the United States and between 400 and 600 million pounds in the United Kingdom.
