Acanthosis nigricans appears as velvety, hyperpigmented, papillomatous, dirty-appearing skin. It is most frequently seen on the neck, axilla, groin, and dorsal hand surfaces. It is often associated with numerous skin tags and rarely affects mucosal surfaces (Fig. 35-2).
