What clinical disease states are associated with acanthosis nigricans? Acanthosis nigricans is a common skin finding, reported in 7.1% of children aged 11 to 16, and is frequently associated with obesity. It is commonly found in association with diabetes and other endocrinopathies with insulin resistance. Paraneoplastic acanthosis nigricans is rare and is most commonly associated with gastrointestinal cancer, especially gastric carcinoma. When associated with malignancy, it is usually abrupt in onset, severe, and may involve mucous membranes and palmar skin. Findings of tripe palms (resembling rugose bovine intestine) and the sign of Leser-Trélat, discussed later in this chapter, are often seen in patients with paraneoplastic acanthosis nigricans. |
