What is multicentric reticulohistiocytosis? Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis is a rare disease characterized by multiple skin papules and nodules in patients with severe arthritis. Skin biopsy shows characteristic histology of a diffuse histiocytic cellular infiltrate with large multinucleate giant cells with ground-glass cytoplasm. Associated malignancy was reported in 28% of the patients in 82 cases reported in the literature. The disease preceded the development of cancer in 73% of the patients. This association is controversial, there was no consistent cancer reported, and there are no careful prospective studies. |
