What factors are necessary for production of the disease histoplasmosis?

The two most important factors are the number of organisms inhaled and immune status of the host. Cellular immunity is particularly important to host defense, as indicated by severe disseminated disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected patients.
