What hormonal methods are available to treat acne? Estrogens often antagonize the effects of androgens. High-dose estrogen birth control pills that use progesterone-like hormones with few androgen effects have been approved for the treatment of acne in women. Spironolactone, an aldosterone antagonist that acts as a relatively weak antiandrogen, has been used to treat hormone related acne in women over the age of 35. Additionally, it has been used for treatment of hirsuitism, androgenic alopecia, and hydradenitis suppurativa due to its antiandrogen effects.
